Virtual 5K will raise awareness about childhood obesity and raise funds for children’s programs

Sowing Seeds of Hope is sponsoring a virtual 5K and One Mile Fun Run to raise awareness about childhood obesity and raise funds for children’s programs. Due to safety concerns, the event will be held in a virtual format. Participants will register for the race online and then run at the location of their choice. While the official event kickoff will be presented online at 8:00 am Central time on Saturday, September 26, runners are free to choose another date and time to complete their course.

The registration fee is $15 for children under 12, $20 for students 13 and over, or $25 for adults. All registration fees include a t-shirt, and available sizes range from Youth XS to Adult 5X. Proceeds from the 5K and Fun Run will be used to fund Sowing Seeds of Hope’s ongoing children’s programs, which address social-emotional development, academic progress, and physical health.

To register, please choose one of the following options:

Registration will remain open until the day of the event, but please note that September 11 is the last day to register in order to receive a t-shirt before the run.

In addition to raising money for children’s activities, the 5K and One Mile Fun Run are also designed to raise awareness about childhood obesity. One of every five children in Alabama is obese. Childhood obesity has been linked with later development of Type II diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, liver and kidney failure, infertility, sleep apnea, orthopedic problems, and cancer. In most cases, childhood obesity can be prevented or corrected with changes in diet and exercise. To learn more about childhood obesity, please visit https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/childhood.
