Since its inception, one of the goals of Sowing Seeds of Hope has been to improve health in the Black Belt. Volunteers and local retired nurses staff regular health fairs in the community. Assistance in obtaining prescription medication is provided for those who could not otherwise afford their drugs. Families are educated about insurance coverage for people of all ages, from AllKids to Medicare Part D.
Through partnership with Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Sowing Seeds of Hope offers a weekly hypertension clinic at the Perry County Health Department and a monthly Diabetes Support Group at the Ed Daniel Job Training Center. An additional health education group for those with pre-diabetes also meets weekly.
Sowing Seeds of Hope was the driving force behind bringing a dialysis center to Marion, reducing the burden and expense of treatment for Perry County residents by shortening the trip to a dialysis center by more than twenty miles.
Sowing Seeds of Hope continues to seek more accessible care for the Marion community by advocating for the establishment of a critical access hospital in Perry County, which has been without local emergency room or in-patient hospital services for more than two decades.
